As you know, Artificial Intelligence has slowly started becoming a part of our lives, from personal assistants to proactive healthcare. While many of us have been questioning how far AI can go, the latest music project which was created with its help shows us how far its intelligence can extend.
Scientists used AI to create ‘new’ songs by legends who passed away years ago at the age of 27. This includes artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, The Doors’ Jim Morrison, and more. The way that AI managed to achieve creating new songs by stars who aren’t with us anymore was by listening to isolated melodies, hooks, rhythms, riffs, solos, and lyrics of approximately 30 songs of each artist.
Although this project already sounds exciting, the aim of it makes it even more special. As you know, mental health is one of the biggest problems in the music industry. Countless musicians have struggled with mental health, drug abuse, and some of these artists’ journey through this, unfortunately, ended with their passing.
The aim of the ‘Lost Tapes of the 27 Club‘ is to increase awareness about the importance of reaching out and getting help when struggling with mental health issues. In the description of the project, it was said during the past decades this issue hasn’t only been ignored but has actually been ‘romanticized by things like the 27 Club.’
Thus, their aim is to show that these unforgettable musicians could have done so much more if they were still with us. This album hopes to encourage ‘music industry insiders to get the mental health support they need’ so that they can keep creating the music that we all love. As for the AI, it just proves that it ‘will never replace the real thing.’
Here’s how Lost Tapes of the 27 Club described this project:
“As long as there’s been popular music, musicians and crews have struggled with mental health at a rate far exceeding the general adult population. And this issue hasn’t just been ignored. It’s been romanticized, by things like the 27 Club – a group of musicians whose lives were all lost at just 27 years old.
To show the world what’s been lost to this mental health crisis, we’ve used artificial intelligence to create the album the 27 Club never had the chance to. Through this album, we’re encouraging more music industry insiders to get the mental health support they need, so they can continue making the music we all love for years to come.
Because even AI will never replace the real thing.”
