Avenged Sevenfold guitarist Synyster Gates spoke in an interview with Rick Beato, and revealed his influences as a guitarist.

Beato asked ‘who are your favorite guitarists’, Gates responded:

“Well, you are absolutely one of my favorite guitar players. Not lying at all, but the guys that I really grew up listening to would probably be like Slash, Dimebag Darrell, John Petrucci, and then at like 17-18, my life was changed by Frank Gambale – that’s why I learned eco picking and all the crazy stuff. Alternate picking saved my life.”

On how he was influenced by his father, he said:

“My dad’s been in and out of sessions his whole entire life. When he was 17, he played with Frank Zappa, and a bunch of different people, so yeah, music was always in the house.

He was always amazing with giving me some information here and there; he just was never completely hands-on because he never wanted to ruin it for the music.

I took piano lessons and hated piano subsequent to that, so he didn’t want to do that experiment all over, so yeah – a genius musician.”

On his online guitar school, he said:

“We just got a bunch of stuff happening. There’s a couple of hundred videos, which I hate to admit barely scratched the surface of stuff. It’s all about nuance and how to really help people learn how to learn. They’re teaching kids how to learn, so I’m really trying to foster and curate this community…

“That’s the key, if you can relate it to other kids, people who are having struggles and don’t know where to look, or who are not looking at the right spot, just one little adjustment might help. It’s all about learning from other people who are having those Eureka moments.”
