Behemoth frontman Adam ‘Nergal’ Darski appeared in an interview with Ultimate Guitar and talked about the process he collaborated with Ghost lead singer Tobias Forge.

Besides his long-time music career with Behemoth, Nergal also started a side project named ‘Me and That Man’ with John Porter but they parted their ways in 2018 after the release of their debut album, ‘Songs of Love and Death.’ Then Nergal kept on going and released another two albums and they featured a variety of celebrated figures like Corey Taylor, Matt Heafy, Ihsahn, Gary Holt, Blaze Bayley, and others.

When compared to his death metal performances with Behemoth, Nergal appears like a completely different musician with Me and That Man. For Me and That Man, he prefers blues/country tones with a much softer vocal. Thus, it is both surprising and gratifying to see how versatile Nergal is throughout his musical career.

Nergal’s latest album with For Me and That Man, ‘New Man, New Songs, Same Shit. Vol.2.’ was released on November 19, 2021, and in the album, Nergal works with Ghost frontman Tobias Forge for the song ‘Under the Spell.’ In the recent interview, Nergal opened up about how it was to work with Forge.

He told that Tobias wasn’t sure and much interested in an online collaboration so he went to Stockholm for face-to-face interaction to convince him. Nergal stated that Forge welcomed him warmly and they had a great conversation so it wasn’t that hard for him to convince Tobias for the album.

Nergal responded to the process with Forge by saying:

“I jumped on the plane in Poland, I flew over to Stockholm because – the way he likes to cooperate if he’s gonna do anything… He wasn’t entirely sure that he will do it – he was interested, he dug the song, he liked it, and he was like, ‘Yeah, we can try…’ But he wasn’t really interested in this online cooperation, so I made this effort and, of course, I think it was absolutely worth it.

He pulled it off so well, he’s also awesome, he’s open-minded, I’m very happy. And the response – the response so far has been fuckin’ ‘Wow!’ I’m super happy, I couldn’t be happier about that. But it was the only face-to-face collaboration on this album, so that’s quite interesting as well.

Then he continued by saying:

He was in the studio, coming up with some stuff for the next Ghost endeavor, and he took his precious time to work on that song. We took a whole afternoon, ’til evening, and we had the song nailed, went out for dinner and a glass of wine, had a great chat, and then I walked him to his apartment and walked back to my hotel, and I fucked off.

During that stay, I also really wanted to make – because LG was still around, and I really wanted to make like a surprise and just show up at his apartment. He was either at his apartment or the hospital, I don’t remember now – but then someone spoiled that, and LG called me back and said, ‘Sorry man, not today, I’m going through a procedure, so next time.’ And sadly, there was no next time, because when I left, a few months later, he was already in Valhalla, sadly.”
