The drummer of the legendary thrash metal band Anthrax and Stormtroopers of Death, Charlie Benante, was recently interviewed by The Eddie Trunk Podcast this week and talked about many things from his solo record, Silver Linings, Anthrax’s 40th anniversary to Anthrax’s ‘Bad Guy’ cover.
As you may remember, last year Charlie Benante uploaded an unexpected video to his official YouTube account and shared the video of Anthrax covers Billie Eilish’s ‘Bad Guy’ with Ra Diaz. These days, Charlie stated that Ra and he always loved the tune of the song and wanted to do a remix of it. Charlie also added that if people do not like different forms of music, they should keep it to themselves.
In his latest ever interview with Eddie Trunk, Charlie once again was asked why he decided to cover Billie Eilish’s worldwide hit single ‘Bad Guy’ while they were in quarantine. According to Charlie, it was his daughter that makes him listen to the song for the first time and he listened to it thousands of times in the car.
Here is what he said:
“That was because of my daughter, who is 15 years old. A couple of years ago, I’d drive her to school, drive her back from school, and she would always play her [Billie’s] songs in the car.
She would always play this song by Billie Eilish called ‘Ocean Eyes,’ and I just thought, ‘This song is so good. How old is this kid?’ And she would play other songs from that record too, and I thought, ‘Wow, this is good.’ And then she released her next album, and that album had ‘Bad Guy’ on it.
And to me, it was just very infectious – plus I’ve heard it thousand times in the car. So there was always something about it that I’m like, ‘There’s something cool to this song, and if I put a little heavy guitar behind it and just rock it out a bit, I don’t know, maybe I could do a little remix of it…’ So that was the basic story behind that one.”
