Today, 15-year-old Toni Cornell, the daughter of Chris Cornell, has posted on her Instagram supporting the newly launched Stop Hate for Profit campaign. While it is possible that Toni’s sensibility to mental health may be an adherence to her father, it certainly shows her responsible and active attitude in the making.
Chris Cornell was a singer and songwriter that was mainly known for being the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the rock bands Soundgarden and Audioslave. It was known that the American musician had been suffering from depression for a while when after his performance at a Soundgarden concert, he had committed suicide in his hotel room on May 18, 2017.
In her post, Toni stands by the clarification that freedom of speech does not grant people with exercising the right to negative expression. Reposting from Gwyneth Paltrow, she furthermore calls ‘organized hate’ to come to an end and drawing attention to the toll participating in online hate has taken over the course of the following years.
Here is what she says in addition to the American actress Paltrow:
“Freedom of speech is not a valid excuse to bully and hurt people on this platform. To misrepresent facts. To completely deny truth. This affects all of us. It’s not only about misinformation in politics. It’s about allowing hate to spread. This is an organized hate that is being allowed to continue to spread at the expense of real people.”
Stop Hate for Profit was a campaign consisting of Facebook ad boycotts that took place on July 2020. Continuing their plan of action as of Monday, September 14, the campaign encourages sharing related posts on social media and taking part in the Instagram ‘Freeze’ that is taking place today.
