Slipknot lead vocalist Corey Taylor talked about his appearance with the audience in the very first show of Slipknot while giving an interview on the 53rd episode of Steve-O’s Wild Ride -Podcast Youtube channel.
Corey Taylor is known as the lead vocalist and songwriter of not only Slipknot but also Stone Sour. He started his music career by founding Stone Sour with drummer Joel Ekman in 1992 and they played in Des Moines.
On the other hand, Slipknot formed in the same area in 1995 by percussionist Shawn Crahan, drummer Joey Jordison, and bassist Paul Gray. Soon after, Joey Jordison, Shawn Crahan, and Mick Thomson asked him to join Slipknot. Taylor joined the band in 1997 and they have released six studio albums as a band.
During the interview, Taylor talked about his journey from the audience at the first show to the stage of Slipknot. He mentioned that he felt something he never felt before between that audience, and he would find a way to take the attention of the best band of the town even if they hadn’t asked him to join.
Here is what he said:
“Yeah, and I’ve never had that feeling before. If they hadn’t asked me to join, I would have done Stone Sour until the cows come home. I would have eventually done something that would have gotten the attention of whatever because we were shopping just like everybody else in Des Moines.
When I watched that first show, I was right in front, they came through the audience, scared the hell out of it, everybody! Because they’re in full masks, they weren’t wearing the coveralls yet, but they were just in these crazy outfits.
And they opened with – I want to say it was like three minutes of just noise and blast beats. It was like being in a fucking Melvins concert! I can’t believe it, it was so gnarly. And for some reason, I was so attracted to it and drawn in by it.
I just was like, ‘I’m gonna be the singer in this band someday.’ And I’ve never had that thought in a million years for anybody else. And a year later, they asked me. It’s crazy.”
