Foo Fighters were recently guests at The Howard Stern Show, where the band’s frontman Dave Grohl answered some questions about Nirvana and described a recent conversation that he had with one of his daughters during which she asked a question about Kurt Cobain for the first time.

During his recent conversation with Howard Stern, Dave Grohl and Pat Smear talked about their feelings towards Nirvana and Kurt Cobain and revealed that listening to some Nirvana songs can be painful and sad because they bring back a lot of memories. Dave Grohl said that he rarely listens to their old records but talked about a recent conversation he had with his daughter.

As it turns out, a night before the Foo Fighters show on Howard Stern, Dave Grohl took his 11 years old daughter for a car ride because she had been stuck in the house for weeks. While they were driving around ‘Come as You Are‘ started playing on the radio and she knew the lyrics by heart although they have never talked about Nirvana, which made him really happy.

Following that, for the first time, Harper asked a question about Kurt Cobain which shocked Grohl. She wanted to know whether he was a shy person to which Dave responded by saying that ‘he kind of was.’ This surprised Harper who said that you would never expect a person who has the courage to go on stage in front of thousands of people to be shy.

This is how Grohl described that car ride with Harper:

“Last night actually, my daughter Harper, she’s 11, she’s like, ‘Dad, can we just go drive around?’ She’s been stuck in the house for weeks. So we jump in the car, in my van, this cool old Ford van from the ’60s, and we just drove around Hollywood, looked at it, it was like eight o’clock at night, just driving around.

And ‘Come as You Are‘ came on the radio, and she started singing. Shes saying every word! I’ve never played her that record, we don’t talk about Nirvana and stuff, and she was singing every word to the song! That to me, that feels good.”

Here’s what Dave Grohl’s said when he was asked about whether his daughter has ever asked him about Nirvana:

“She actually did for the first time last night. It was a trip! She wanted to know if Kurt was shy, I think. I was like, ‘Yeah, he kind of was.’ And then she said, ‘Was he shy around people he didn’t know – or was he also shy around people he did know?’

And it was interesting, it was really the first time she started really asking me questions about Kurt, that was a first. It was great.”

To which Howard responded:

“You know why that’s such a good question? Because most of us don’t understand someone who is shy but yet could go up in front of thousands!”

Dave Grohl replied by saying:

“Howard, that is exactly what she said! That is exactly what my daughter said last night. She goes, ‘It’s so strange that he could be so shy but then stand up on stage and play music in front of thousands of people.’ That’s exactly what she said.”
