Megadeth recently posted a photo on their official Facebook account and told the funny story of how David Ellefson and Dave Mustaine decided who their band’s lead vocalist was going to be over one night.
As you know, Megadeth was formed in 1983 by bassist David Ellefson guitarist Dave Mustaine. It was and still is one of the most popular heavy metal bands of all time and they are credited as one of the four bands which contributed to the revolution of thrash metal as a genre. Even though they had achieved success, the band had decided to temporarily disband in 2002 following Mustaine’s arm injury.
In 2004 the band was re-established by Mustaine without the co-founder David Ellefson who then decided to take legal action against Mustaine. However, in 2010, Ellefson decided to settle out of court and rejoin Megadeth and the co-founders have been working together ever since. Actually, they will be performing in numerous locations in the United States, Europe, and Russia in 2021.
With a recent Facebook post, Megadeth revealed that Dave Mustaine was not the first choice when it came to choosing the lead vocalist of their band. In fact, Mustaine and Ellefson had been auditioning people back in 2013 and after meeting a lot of unsuccessful candidates, they finally realized that there’s no hope and that they’re running out of time and money. Thus, Ellefson suggested that Mustaine should be the lead vocalist of Megadeth ‘and it stuck.’
Here’s what Megadeth said on their recent Facebook post:
“Fun Fact: Back in 2013, Dave Mustaine was asked by 103.5 The Fox on how he became the singer of Megadeth, to which he replied: ‘Well, my pal here, Dave [Ellefson], and I were auditioning guys and we kind of ran out of patience. The last guy that auditioned as a vocalist came – and we were homeless at the time – and the guy rolled up with a 12-pack of beer, and we thought, ‘Great!’ Then we got a closer look at him and he had eyeliner on. And we figured, ‘As soon as the last beer was down, he was out of the band.’ It was New Year’s Eve one night, and David just goes, ‘Man, why don’t you sing?’ and I was like, ‘Why don’t you?’ So I ended up doing it, and it stuck.
