The iconic British musician Elton John posted his photos with his dear friend Davey Johnstone taken during a trip in Barbados and revealed a rarely-known detail about his song ‘Snow Queen‘ which was apparently dedicated to Cher.

In 1976, Elton John released his well-known duet with Kiki Dee, ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.’ The song was written by Elton John with Bernie Taupin. It was the first #1 single in the UK for both John and Kiki Dee, topping the chart for six weeks in mid-1976. On the B-Side to ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,’ there was another famous song by Elton John, ‘Snow Queen.’

Recently on Instagram, Elton John posted the old photos of his trip to Barbados along with his dear friends and musicians Davey Johnstone, Kiki Dee, Bernie Taupin, Tony King, and David Nutter. On the caption of his post, John shared the story of how his song ‘Snow Queen‘ was created with the contributions of his beloved friends.

Apparently, during their vacation, Elton and his friends were playing a song over and over again which eventually turned into ‘Snow Queen’ with the help of Bernie Taupin who penned the lyrics. John also revealed that he wasn’t aware of the fact that the lyrics Bernie wrote were actually about the Goddess of Pop, Cher, until much later.

Here’s how Sir Elton John described his memory of writing ‘Snow Queen’:

“Snow Queen was the B-Side to ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ and has such a fun story behind it. I was in Barbados with Bernie, Kiki Dee, Davey Johnstone, Tony King, David Nutter, and a few others. Davey had his guitar with him so we would just play around and make songs up.

We were playing this song every day, with silly (and quite rude!) lyrics pitched in by Tony and the others. I thought the song would make a great B-Side so Bernie penned some more suitable lyrics, and that became Snow Queen. I didn’t realize that the words Bernie had written were actually about Cher until much later!

Snow Queen is one of the songs to feature in my new Jewel Box. Check out the link in my bio for more info!”
