Dream Theater’s former drummer, Mike Portnoy, recently posted a photo on his Instagram account and paid tribute to a bass legend who he considers to be one of the pioneers of bass and is known for his amazing work in the 60’s and 70’s rock scene.
Mike Portnoy is known for his career as the drummer of Dream Theatre, his performances in numerous side projects, tribute bands, and as the founder of Liquid Tension Experiment in 1997. Portnoy is also the drummer and long-term member of the rock supergroup Transatlantic.
Portnoy has been in the rock and metal scene since 1984 and there is no doubt that there have been numerous musicians who have influenced him during his career. Sadly, just some hours ago, he found out that one of his biggest inspirations, Tim Bogert, passed away at the age of 76.
Tim Bogert was a successful bassist who co-founded legendary bands such as Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, and Beck, Bogert & Appice. Mike Portnoy said that he’s one of the ‘true pioneers of the instrument.’ In fact, Bogert’s contribution to rock culture and history was recognized in 1999 when he was added to the ‘The Hollywood Rock Walk of Fame.’
Here’s what Mike Portnoy said in the caption of his latest Instagram post:
“So sorry to hear of the passing of bass legend Tim Bogert. One of the true pioneers of the instrument in the late 60’s/early 70’s with his work with Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, and Beck Bogert Appice #RIPTimBogert.”
