Former drummer of Dream Theater, Mike Portnoy posted a photo of a recent competition between him and his son Max Portnoy to decide which one was the better drummer and he picked Max instead of himself.

As you may recall, back in 1985, Mike Portnoy co-founded a band called Majesty along with John Petrucci and John Myung, which eventually become Dream Theater. On September 8, 2010, Portnoy announced he decided to leave the band and replaced by Mike Mangini. Known for his technical skill as a drummer, Portnoy has won 30 awards from the Modern Drummer magazine.

Recently on Instagram, Mike Portnoy shared a post about a competition between him and his son Max Portnoy which would declare the best drummer among the father and son. On the caption of his post, Mike invited his fans to vote to decide the ‘Best Metal Drummer‘ via the link he shared.

However, Portnoy didn’t ask fans’ votes for himself but for his son Max. Mike mentioned that Max was an exceptional drummer whom he also voted for. Apparently, Mike was also nominated for the ‘Best Prog Drummer‘ category which fans could vote for him if they felt guilty about choosing Max for the other category.

Here’s what Mike Portnoy stated in the caption of his latest post:

“Being everybody is in a voting mood this week, I guess I should post about this election:

Both Max Portnoy and myself are nominated in the Best Metal Drummer category…
I’d have no issues with not voting for me and vote for Max instead!

1) The Tallah album is one of the best Metal albums of the year
2) He blasts way better than me anyway! 🤘

If you still feel bad for not voting for me, I’m also nominated in the Best Prog Drummer category as well… 😎”
