Former Guns N’ Roses guitarist DJ Ashba looked back on his time with the band during a recent interview with Audio Ink Radio. According to the rocker, he had countless good memories with lead singer Axl Rose since he’s a cool person unlike many other people tend to believe.
For those of you who may not know, Ashba was announced as the new lead guitarist of GNR on March 23, 2009, replacing Robin Finck who had left the band to rejoin Nine Inch Nails. He toured with the band for the first time on December 11, 2009, in Taiwan as part of the Chinese Democracy Tour.
Ashba also toured with the band as part of its 2013 Australian Tour and appeared on the band’s 2014 Appetite for Democracy 3D video release. Six years after, DJ Ashba announced he was leaving the band on July 27, 2015. The reason behind this decision was to focus on his family as well as his other band, Sixx:A.M.
Since then, the guitarist has been successfully working with his band including Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx and released two studio albums a year after he left GNR, ‘Prayers for the Damned, Vol 1’ and ‘Prayers for the Damned, Vol 2′ in 2016.
During a recent interview, DJ Ashba was asked about his favorite memory from his time with Guns N’ Roses. Apparently, most of his happy times were with lead singer Axl Rose who is often misunderstood according to him.
If you ask Ashba, Rose is one of the coolest people to spend time with once you are in his inner circle. Once you gained his trust, there’s nobody better you can find than Rose both on and off stage which sounds unexpected considering his reputation.
Ashba’s surprising answer follows:
“There are so many memories from that six, seven years. I think the biggest memory when I think back on those days, it’s just how probably misunderstood Axl is. He’s just, to me; I can’t speak for other people, but he’s just one of the fucking coolest guys to hang out with.
When he’s your friend, he has a very tight circle, but when you kind of gain his trust and are in that circle, you couldn’t find a better fucking dude. He’s just a cool fucking dude. And we had a ton of fun, on stage and even more fun off stage.”
