Exodus drummer Tom Hunting opened up about his journey fighting a deadly type of cancer during his recent interview with the Put Up Your Dukes podcast and shared his experiences concerning the treatments.

Unfortunately, Hunting revealed last April that he had been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, which is a type of stomach cancer. Both his bandmates and fans were devastated upon receiving the tragic news, so Gary Holt decided to launch a GoFundMe campaign to pay his high medical expenses.

As more than $100,000 was raised for the drummer, he reflected his gratitude towards his supporters many times through the videos posted on Holt’s Instagram account. Afterward, Hunting announced that he had started to receive chemotherapy and would undergo a total gastrectomy surgery.

Then, Holt gave the good news saying that Hunting was declared ‘cancer free’ and would recover entirely after a few more treatments. In his interview, the Exodus drummer unveiled that doctors found mesothelioma on his abdomen, and he underwent another surgery for it. He highlighted that he started receiving immunotherapy, which is better than chemotherapy, which Hunting defined as a ‘nuclear bomb.’

Hunting said in his interview that:

“Through that, they also found mesothelioma on my abdomen, and I got surgery for that too. That’s kind of what they’re keeping an eye on now. I’m getting immunotherapy. Chemo is like a nuclear bomb — they put it in you, and it goes in there and kills everything: cancerous cells, healthy cells; it all just gets obliterated. It’s hard — it’s hard on your body; it’s hard on your everything.

“So that’s where I’m at in the journey right now. I’m getting immunotherapy. As I said, chemo is like a nuclear bomb that kills everything, and immunotherapy is more like… it trains your immune system to go in and kill any rogue activity on a cellular level.

It’s a lot like some of the HIV medicines they have nowadays, and it’s a lot like the COVID vaccine. It tells your immune system to go out and kill this. If it’s rogue and it’s in your body, it trains your immune system to go kill it.”
