During a recent appearance on KNAC.COM, Anthrax bassist Frank Bello remembered his first time meeting KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, who were his heroes.

Besides his longtime successful music career with Anthrax, Frank Bello also has an interest in writing. He released his memoir, ‘Fathers, Brothers, And Sons: Surviving Anguish, Abandonment, And Anthrax,’ on November 2, 2021. In the book, Bello focuses on the deep subjects in his life starting from his childhood and then followed by his career with Anthrax.

The foreword of the book was written by KISS’ Gene Simmons, which marks his special place in Bello’s life. During the conversation, Frank Bello expressed how much he admired KISS members because they taught him so many lessons. He said that they were very kind to him from the moment he met them.

Later on, Bello explained that he was very excited when he first met Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley since they were his heroes. Anthrax bassist also recalled that he had met them without their makeup so he felt privileged for that. Since KISS members would wear their make-up all the time, seeing them without their make-up was a big chance for Bello. He would wonder how they would look without their make-ups so it was a very special moment for him.

Frank Bello is speaking on seeing KISS members without their make-ups:

“My first time meeting KISS — my first time meeting Gene and Paul and Aucoin Management in New York City. That was pretty, ‘Oh my God.’ That was bigger than life. They were my heroes. I’m actually meeting my heroes. Those were the days… Remember, they weren’t seen without their makeup, and they’d cover their faces.

We were fortunate enough to see them without their makeup, and we felt extra special. Because we’re getting to see something that nobody else has seen right now. I see Paul Stanley’s face without the star. It was these little things that go through your mind when you’re a fan.

How does Gene look without his makeup on? That’s Gene Simmons? I could see his hair — it’s without the ponytail on top, and you kind of think these things. So those were very special times for me, specifically the first time, ’cause I got to see something that I never thought I’d see — KISS without their makeup. It was very special.”
