One of the biggest fan pages of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury shared a post on their Instagram page revealing his friend and personal assistant Peter ‘Phoebe’ Freestone‘s fondest memory about him, apparently, it’s Freddie smiling when he feels comfortable.

As you may know, Freddie Mercury is known for many things, including his teeth which have given him his distinctive smile and his signature look.

Freddie’s distinctive grin was the result of having four extra teeth in the back of his mouth which pushed those at the front forward. He always refused to have his teeth fixed, fearing it would affect his vocal ability.

While Mercury seemed okay with having extra teeth, it was revealed by his personal assistant and friend Phoebe that he was self-conscious about them all the time and tried to cover his teeth up during interviews, except when he was at his home and with his friends.

Peter ‘Phoebe’ Freestone also revealed that his laugh was the best memory about Freddie Mercury since his real self, the warm, funny, and relaxed Freddie shined through during those times rather than the rock star everybody knew back then.

Here is what Phoebe said:

“There are so many memories for me from the twelve years I knew Freddie, but the moments that always stood out for me were when he was at home laughing. I know this sounds quite ordinary, but whenever you see Freddie smiling or laughing during an interview, he always uses his top lip to cover his teeth, or else he brings up his head to cover his mouth.

The reason for this was that he hated his teeth and always tried to cover them up. When he was at home he wasn’t self-conscious surrounded by friends, and he would just throw his head back and laugh out loud with his mouth wide open. Those were the times when the warm, funny and relaxed man was able to appear, without having to be wary of strangers seeing him without the Freddie Mercury – the Rock Star persona.”
