Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong‘s son and the drummer of SWMRS, Joey was accused of emotional and sexual abuse by The Regrettes’ singer Lydia Night, according to the report of Mercury News writer Jim Harrington.
Before The Regrettes’ singer, Lydia Night revealing her claims, the official Instagram account of Joey Armstrong’s band SWMRS shared a statement about the ongoing sexual harassment issues in the music industry. In their sensitive open letter, they stated:
“People place so much trust in us when they come to our shows and we have always tried our best to honor that. We try to center the safety of our community in every decision we make. But oftentimes it’s still not enough to stop harm from happening.”
Following the SWMRS’ statement, The Regrettes‘ frontwoman Lydia Night revealed the emotional abuse and sexual coercion she was subjected by Joey Armstrong on her recent Instagram post. Lydia shared a five-page long statement explaining her troubling experience with Joey in detail when she was only 16 years old.
According to Lydia Night’s claims, Joey Armstrong was 22 years old at the time and wanted Lydia to keep their relationship secret due to their age gap. Moreover, she gave the details of how Joey exercised power over her sexually during their relationship:
“He moved much faster sexually than I was used to but I didn’t question it because he was older and I like him. Everyone in his band, crew, family, and his manager knew that we were seeing each other. Because of our age difference, Joey would continually ask me to keep our relationship as hidden as possible and I did.”
Furthermore, The Regrettes’ vocalist accused Joey Armstrong and SWMRS members of being hypocrites regarding their statements on sexual abuse issues in the music industry. Lydia Night mentioned that their statement pushed her to share her experience publicly and added:
“It’s important to me that Joey and his entire band are held accountable to fully understand that even though they may view themselves as ‘good guys’ they are continuing to perpetuate the exact toxic culture they are trying to call out.”
Following Lydia’s post, Joey Armstrong made another statement on SWMRS’ Instagram account as a response to the claims about his previous relationship:
“Hey everyone. I want to address Lydia’s Instagram post about our relationship. While I don’t agree with some of the things she said about me, it’s important that she be allowed to say them and that she be supported for speaking out. I respect her immensely and fully accept that I failed her as a partner.
I was selfish and I didn’t treat her the way she deserves to be have been treated both during our relationship and in the two years since we broke up. I have apologized to her privately and I hope she can forgive me, if and when she is ready to do so. I own my mistakes and will work hard to regain the trust that I lost.”
