Lzzy Hale of Halestorm recently joined a conversation with Rolling Stone and remembered the time they won the Grammy Award and the other nominees’ reactions to it.

Halestorm has been active in the music scene since 1997, and they have built a reputation with their nonstop live performances, which can reach 250 per year. Although they were praised for their energetic live shows as a local band, their breakthrough came after nearly 15 years. In fact, their efforts finally paid off at the 2013 Grammy Awards.

In 2013 Halestorm won the Grammy for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance against some really tough opponents; Iron Maiden, Lamb Of God, Anthrax, Marilyn Manson, and Megadeth. The lead singer of the band, Lzzy Hale, was the only female nominee in this category, and the Grammy-winning song was their lead single ‘Love Bites (So Do I)‘ from their second album, ‘The Strange Case Of…’

When asked about this award in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Lzzy recalled people’s reactions when they won. She explained that not only was she the only female nominee in that category, but that they were also the only new rock band. Their win was a complete surprise considering their opponents, and she admitted that they hadn’t prepared anything because they thought it was impossible.

She stressed that all of their opponents had influenced them and their music; thus, it would be absurd for them to get it. However, they ended up taking the award home. The rocker revealed that the Megadeth members were joking around and saying, ‘Lzzy stole our award.’ The vocalist still paid her respects to the other nominees, saying they probably wouldn’t have written their Grammy-winning song ‘Love Bites (So Do I)’ if it weren’t for bands like them.

Lzzy Hale’s memories from the 2013 Grammy Awards follow:

“Not only was I the only female, but we were also the only new rock band. All these bands that were nominated with or against us were people we were influenced by. And that inspired us. We really had nothing prepared because we were like, ‘Dude, we’re not going to win this.’ It was a complete surprise when we did.

Then, there was this joke going around because I know a bunch of the Megadeth guys and a couple of the other nominees, and they were all joking about how ‘Lzzy stole our Grammy.’ I was in an interview with Eddie Trunk one time on That Metal Show, and he had a couple of the losers of the Grammys as guests, and he had me pop in a video just to make that comment. But if it wasn’t for those bands, we probably wouldn’t have even written ‘Love Bites.'”

After this Grammy, they released three more albums, the last of which hit the shelves in May this year. Halestorm has also collaborated with many major metal bands since their debut in the music world, including Alice Cooper, Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine, and many more. Nowadays, they continue one of these collaborations and perform with Mammoth WVH and Alter Bridge.
