Guitar Tech Chris Schleyer recently spoke to Ultimate Guitar and talked about Tool and Puscifer lead vocalist Maynard James Keenan using different words while performing the bands’ songs live.

Chris Schleyer has been currently pursuing a very successful career as a guitar technician and had a chance to work with many famous musicians bands such as Katy Perry, Marilyn Manson, and Maynard James Keenan. Also, he was hired to replace James Iha and then became his guitar tech.

Even though he has teamed up with many musicians, Schleyer talked about working for Keenan during Tool, Puscifer, and A Perfect Circle’s live shows. Keenan’s fans know that he has a great sense of humor and is famous for his pranks. During his interview, Schleyer also highlighted Keenan inserting hidden words into the songs for fun.

Inserting the words during the live shows started when Keenan first mentioned Tool’s engineer in the song as ‘Nobby’ and ‘Junior.’ Then, Keenan continued to insert crew members’ names, and it became a longtime joke between them. Schleyer added that Keenan also used his name while performing ‘Ænima’ by singing ‘Fret for your Schleyer.’

In Schleyer’s words, he said:

“It actually started out as ‘Nobby’ or ‘Junior,’ Tool’s live sound engineer and lighting designer. Maynard would just slip one of their names into a song during a show to keep the crew and himself entertained. It was very funny because we all used in-ear monitors, so we could hear him very clearly. I worked for A Perfect Circle, Tool, and Puscifer, so it became a running joke with all three bands.

You know… part of the fun is finding those little gems yourself! I remember ‘Ænima’ was a good one… ‘Fret for your Schleyer.’ There are a few out there. A Perfect Circle and Puscifer as well. It’s pretty funny. Maynard actually threw one into a live BBC recording. Hilarious! I felt bad for the rest of the band because they had to stay focused and not mess up! Meanwhile, the crew is in the hallway cracking up… (sorry Mat)!

It is. I was hired as a fill-in for James Iha before he joined the band. They weren’t sure if he was going to be available to do the tour and needed a backup plan. I was basically hired as a rehearsal guitarist/fill-in for James in case he couldn’t make it. He ended up being available and I was hired on as his guitar tech. James rocks. It was a pleasure to work for him.”

Therefore, it seems like even though Maynard James Keenan and the crew members are having fun by inserting different names in the songs, it was hard for the other members of Tool, Puscifer, and A Perfect Circle to stay focused during the live shows.
