Metallica’s frontman James Hetfield spoke in an interview with Sixx Sense and telling how he create the names of Metallica songs. He said:
“There’s no one specific way. There are some things that grab me, or I’ll be reading something and all of a sudden you put a few words together and that looks cool. ‘That looks really cool. Maybe it will fit into a song, I hope.’
And then other songs are more like – it’s like your pet or something. It’s like, ‘Why is your pet named Scratchy?’ ‘I don’t know, it scratches a bunch!’ You name the song after its character. And you just try and pick the best ones.
The band is pretty… they’re pretty willing to let me do that stuff. It’s like, I write the lyrics, I wanna name the song, but I’ll [go], ‘Hey, what do you think of this? Here, I’ve got three different titles for this, what do you think?’
A song title is pretty cool when if you read something, you wanna know more about it. It’s like, ‘What? What does that mean?’ I find that open for interpretation and always pretty attractive.“
