Dream Theater frontman James LaBrie made an appearance on Radio Forrest, during which he talked about the current status of his relationship with Mike Portnoy.
Dream Theater has gone under several lineup changes throughout their career. In 1991, James LaBrie replaced Charlie Dominici as the lead singer, while Derek Sherinian joined the band in 1995 to replace their first keyboardist Kevin Moore. The three original members remained together until Portnoy left in 2010.
Mike Portnoy announced his departure from Dream Theater on September 8, 2010, after 25 years with the band. This decision affected his relationship with his former bandmates negatively. There was tension, especially between him and LaBrie, and they stopped keeping in touch. Dream Theater then recruited Mike Mangini and continued their tenure.
Back on August 28, 2020, John Petrucci released his solo record ‘Terminal Velocity,’ which was his first solo effort in fifteen years. He collaborated with his former Dream Theater bandmate Mike Portnoy, who played drums on all the album tracks. This collaboration led to speculations about a Dream Theater reunion with Portnoy, but the band denied such possibility.
In an interview on Radio Forrest, James LaBrie talked about his current relationship with Mike Portnoy. He stated that he hasn’t spoken to the drummer since his departure in 2010. So, it seems that the tension between LaBrie and Portnoy still remains the same.
During his appearance on Radio Forrest, James LaBrie reflected on his current relationship with Mike Portnoy:
“I haven’t spoken to Mike, to be quite honest, since he left the band. So I think that pretty much says it all.“
