Led Zeppelin’s founder and iconic guitarist, Jimmy Page, recently posted an album cover of the mid-60s and told the story of how he was contracted to take part in the recording of an iconic single as a session musician but was eventually not very needed.
As you may know, Jimmy Page is quite active on his social media accounts but instead of keeping his fans up to date as other rockstars do, he prefers posting photos from years ago and telling interesting stories about his life in the rock scene. In a way, Jimmy Page uses his Instagram account as his archive where he can save his memories and share stories that have never been publicized before.
Just some hours ago, Page posted the cover of The Who’s debut single ‘I Can‘t Explain.’ This classic garage rock song was written by Pete Townshend, and produced by Shel Talmy and it soon became a huge success. It ranked Number 8 on the UK Singles Charts and as it turns out, Jimmy Page was supposed to be in the recording of the track as a session musician.
Back then Jimmy Page was pretty new in the rock scene and was a 21 years old young man who was pursuing a career as a rockstar. With his recent Instagram post, Page revealed that he was contracted to play on the recording session of this song but that eventually, he was not needed that much, but that he still ‘played on it somewhere in the background.’ He said it was a pure privilege to be involved and recalled the adrenaline he felt.
Here’s what Jimmy Page said in the caption of his recent Instagram post:
“On this day in 1965, ‘I Can’t Explain’ by The Who was released in the UK.
Today sees the UK release of the iconic ‘I Can’t Explain’ – the first single by The Who, produced by Shel Talmy and engineered by the great Glyn Johns at Pye Studios in Marble Arch, London. Although I had been contracted to play on this session I wasn’t really needed but I played on it somewhere in the background. What a privilege it was to be part of that pure adrenaline rush.
Pete Townshend played a blinder, you can hear a few of my phrases on the B-side ‘Bald Headed Woman’ on the fuzzbox.”
