Joe Perry, the lead guitarist and founding member of Aerosmith, has revealed the most significant moment in the history of the band and shared the details about Aerosmith’s luckiest night.
Perry explained the story of the band’s milestone on August 5, 1972, during the early years of their career. On his latest Instagram post, Joe Perry recalled the time when Aerosmith booked a show at Max’s Kansas City in New York. That night one of the most prestigious labels’, Columbia Records’, president Clive Davis was invited to see the band play.
Although Aerosmith was not scheduled to play that day at the club, the owners paid from their own pockets to secure a place on the bill, as Joe Perry revealed. The luck and talent of Aerosmith were merged and they signed to Columbia in mid-1972 for a reported $125,000 and issued their debut album, ‘Aerosmith.’

“Aerohistory: It was no surprise!
On this day, August 5, 1972, Aerosmith booked a show at Max’s Kansas City in New York. Columbia Records President Clive Davis was invited to see the band play; Aerosmith was not originally scheduled to play that night at the club, but they paid from their own pockets to secure a place on the bill.
Davis liked what he saw and Aerosmith signed to Columbia in mid-1972 for a reported $125,000 and issued their debut album, ‘Aerosmith’.”
