Guitar legend Joe Satriani has made a live stream on Facebook and answered questions from his fans. A fan asked him that the best advice he could give to beginners. He said (trascriped by Ultimate-guitar):

“Number one: you’ve gotta warm up. It’s things like these… *plays a chromatic exercise* It’s the most horrible sound ever. But you have to start slow, you have to warm everything up. This is a really important thing. But that’s an obvious advice, everyone gives you that advice.

I think the coolest advice I’ve ever got, probably would apply to all musicians, and it came from Lennie Tristano who told me ‘Only play what you want to play.’ That’s like a Zen riddle, right? In other words, don’t play any notes that you don’t want to play.

When you think about it, that is the secret of music and life altogether. But attaining that level of musicianship is something that you chase through your whole life. And I still do. I just keep all of Lenny’s advice in my head. I took about two months of bee-bop lessons from him when I was just 18 years old, and it really had a super positive effect on my musicianship and my life. He was a true great.”
