Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci spoke in an interview with Paul Warren, and revealed an embrassing thing that you probably have not heard before. He also mentioned about Metallica and said:

“This is kind of embarrassing to admit, but the first time I heard Stevie Ray Vaughan on the radio, he was playing ‘Voodoo Child,’ and I didn’t know the Hendrix version. Sorry. [Laughs]

And I was like, ‘Oh my god, who the hell is this?!’. I remember listening to it like, ‘That’s the most ridiculous guitar playing that I’ve ever heard!’ And then really getting into Stevie Ray and figuring out that was Hendrix song. [Laughs]

But that was definitely one of those moments. I remember exactly where I was. I had a similar situation with ‘Eruption‘ because who hasn’t? You hear that and you’re like, ‘What the hell was that?’ You can’t even fathom that it’s a guitar.

When you’re young and you maybe haven’t been playing that long you don’t know anything about technique, you don’t know what’s going on.

I remember hearing ‘Master of Puppets’ for the first time. I was at Berkley, just blown away by the sound and the playing and everything.
