Metallica’s solo guitarist Kirk Hammett was the special guest of the radio program “2 Hours With Matt Pinfield” and explained his guitar journey in his childhood years. He said:

“The first song I tried to play was Thin Lizzy’s ‘Jailbreak.’ I was trying to learn stuff off [1976’s] ‘The Song Remains the Same,’ ’cause that album had just come out; I was trying to pick out songs from KISS, Aerosmith, even The Allman Brothers Band.

I was really just interested in just picking out my favorite parts of songs from my favorite bands, just little parts. I’ll never forget this – I’ve been playing for maybe two or three days, and at the end of that day there were at least three or four little things I was able to play on my own that I learned from records.

That’s pretty much how I began playing guitar; I always had my own little thing I wanted to do that didn’t have anything to with any of the teachings going on around me – like my own little project.
