Former Dream Theatre drummer Mike Portnoy recently shared a post on his official Twitter account announcing that he and his bandmates from the superband Winery Dogs started writing new music for their third studio album. Apparently, the three members got together to work on their upcoming record on National Dog Day after announcing there’s a new album coming nearly two months ago.
When the idea of forming a power trio super band was suggested by Mike Portnoy and former David Lee Roth bassist Billy Sheehan, the duo founded Bad Apple and invited guitarist and vocalist John Sykes. After abandoning the project, the famous talk show host Eddie Trunk suggested that ex-Poison singer Richie Kotzen take the spot.
That’s when the Winery Dogs was formed in Los Angeles, CA, by Richie Kotzen, Billy Sheehan, and Mike Portnoy in 2012. The band released its eponymous debut studio album in Japan on May 5, 2013, and worldwide on July 23. The record reached No. 27 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and it also debuted in the top 5 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums, Alternative Albums, and Independent Albums.
Since their last studio record, the Winery Dogs only released an EP titled ‘Dog Years‘ on August 4, 2017. The EP included five songs in total, and after its release, the superband decided to take a break. Since then, fans have been waiting for some new music since they didn’t officially break up. Fortunately, Billy Sheehan shared a post on his official Facebook page nearly two months ago and announced that they are working on a new album together.
In the Facebook post, Sheehan captioned:
“It’s a beautiful day here in Los Angeles. And what a great reason to visit with the Winery Dogs writing new songs! I am VERY happy and excited about this.”
Since then, all band members have been silent on their social media accounts about their upcoming record. Lucky for their fans, all three members recently shared a post on Instagram and Twitter revealing that they got together to work on their new music once again. While Portnoy and Sheehan shared posts on their Twitter page stating the perfect day to record an album for the Winery Dogs is on National Dog Day, they all seemed very excited and happy about the new music.
In the Twitter post, Portnoy stated:
“Being today is National Dog Day, what better day for the Winery Dogs to get back to work for Round 2 of writing and tracking for the Winery Dogs 3.”
