Former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy expressed his love for his mother, who passed away in a tragic accident years ago, on her death anniversary by sharing their photos and a video about Carpe Diem.
As you probably know, unfortunately, Mike Portnoy’s mother died on November 16, 1984, when the plane she was in crashed off the Atlantic City coastline. The drummer was seventeen years old back then, and he was devastated after losing her in such a tragic accident.
In one of his previous interviews, Portnoy revealed that his teacher talked about Carpe Diem the afternoon before the crash, and he realized its true meaning after his mother’s death. He hugged and kissed her at the airport, which was the last time he saw his mother.
Then, the drummer reflected his feelings about his mother’s death on Dream Theater’s EP entitled ‘A Change of Seasons’ and a video about Carpe Diem along with its tattoo. Recently, Portnoy paid tribute to his late mother on Instagram on the day she passed away and reminded his fans how he has honored her legacy with his works.
Portnoy’s IG post read:
“November 16, 1984: It was 37 years tonight that I lost my mom in a tragic plane crash. I wrote about this life-changing experience in DT’s ‘A Change Of Seasons,’ and the Carpe Diem message is still as important today as it was 37 years ago. Take a few minutes to watch this video I did a few years ago… It just may change your life. It surely did mine!
Give your loved ones a hug and a kiss because you never know when they’ll be gone forever. RIP Mom.”
