Ex-Dream Theater drummer and current member of Sons Of Apollo, Mike Portnoy, posted the photos of celebrities who passed away in 2020 on Instagram and paid tribute to those people who had a personal impact on his life and music.

As you may recall, the year 2016 came with a lot of grief for the music and film industry. It was also known as being one of the ‘worst years of celebrity losses‘. In 2016, we lost iconic musicians and celebrities, including David Bowie, Prince, Muhammad Ali, Leonard Cohen, George Michael, and many more.

However, 2020 hasn’t been easy for anyone in the world regardless of their occupation or nationality. Starting with the Covid-19 pandemic, the world has been struggling with many other political and economic issues throughout the first seven months of this year. 2020 was also not a great year for celebrity losses. Since the beginning of this year, the world has lost many artists and celebrities, such as Pete Way, Bob Kulick, Kobe Bryant, Steve Priest, and many more.

Recently on Instagram, Mike Portnoy posted the photos of the celebrities we had lost this year to pay tribute to those who had an influence on his life personally. On the caption of his post, Mike shared the list of celebrities who passed away in the first seven months of 2020.

Furthermore, Portnoy confronted the social media trolls who might have criticized him for caring about celebrity deaths so much, while on the other hand, millions of non-celebrities died due to various other reasons, including coronavirus pandemic. Mike stated that he also cared about them, but he wanted to honor the artists who affected his life and music.

Here’s what Mike Portnoy stated on the caption of his post:

“2020 has been a doozie so far…a Global Pandemic, Racial Riots & Political Divide aside, the list of celebrity deaths so far seems to be rivaling (or even surpassing) 2016 as one of the worst years ever of celebrity losses…and we still have 5 months left! 😳

And yes before some social media trolls get their panties in a bundle, I’m aware that we’ve also lost over 700,000 people due to Covid-19 as well as all of the Millions of non-celebrities that have passed away this year as well…I’m aware they are people too and just as important…but I just wanted to take a moment to pay tribute and thank the people whose lives have affected me *personally*…(only a portion of this list is represented in the photo)

RIP 🙏
Neil Peart, Pete Way, Paul Chapman, Emmit Rhodes, Adam Schlesinger, Sean Reinert, Reed Mullin, Bob Kulick, Steve Priest, Peter Green, Martin Birch, Alan Parker, Kobe Bryant, Fred Willard, Kelly Preston, Holly Lane, Vinnie Kowalski, Amie Harwick, Joel Schumacher, Little Richard, Bill Withers, John Lewis, Regis Philbin, John Saxon, Jerry Stiller, Kirk Douglas, Max Von Sydow, James Lipton, Buck Henry, Kenny Rogers, Charlie Daniels, Ennio Morricone, Carl Reiner, Terry Jones.

Can we take the rest of the year off, please?? 😔”
