During the recent interview with Ultimate-Guitar, Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme explained when he decided to become sober.
He said that ‘I will be turning 40 before I know it. My dad died at 40 because of doing the same thing I’m doing’. Here’s the statement:
“I think it was shortly after I turned 30 and I just thought, “You know what? Enough’s enough.” I think I always had that thought of my dad was 40 when he died and I’d just turned 30. I can remember turning 20 like it was a few months ago.
I can remember specifically thinking, “I will be turning 40 before I know it. My dad died at 40 because of doing the same thing I’m doing.” Here I am, not far away from my 40th birthday [December 2nd] and it has happened very, very quickly. So, yeah, it was the right thing to do and it was the right thing to stop. I’ve not really looked back, to be honest.”
He also said:
“I just drank and I drank all day every day and that is what it became. It wasn’t until I got to the point where I really started to feel physically ill and you look at yourself in the mirror and think, ”Fuckin’ hell, I’m huge. I’ve put on so much weight.”
I thought I didn’t recognize myself and I definitely got to the point where I felt psychologically I wasn’t right in the head. I felt like I was really starting to lose my grasp on reality a little bit.”
