One of the most memorable bands when it comes to grunge, Pearl Jam surely has many legendary songs. If you were to make a list out of their iconic songs, ‘Jeremy’ definitely would be on top without a doubt. For those who do not know the background of the song, it will strengthen your connection to ‘Jeremy’ the second you find out the tragedy behind it.
Pearl Jam frontman and lyricist Eddie Vedder revealed the heartbreaking story of Pearl Jam’s song ‘Jeremy’ and apparently, Edder wrote the song over the tragic story of a 15-year-old boy named Jeremy who shot himself in front of his teacher and classmates in the school back in 1991.
‘Jeremy’ was written by vocalist Eddie Vedder and it was released in 1992 as the third single from Pearl Jam’s iconic debut album ‘Ten.’ It reached the number five spot on both the Mainstream and Modern Rock Billboard charts and became a classic Pearl Jam song.
In addition to the success of the song itself, it also gained popularity for its music video which was released in 1992 and a year later the ‘Jeremy’ music video was awarded four MTV Video Music Awards, including Best Video of the Year.
While the song and the music video was a huge commercial success, the story of the song is rather devastating since Eddie Vedder actually wrote the song after a 15-year-old boy named Jeremy Wade Delle from Richardson, Texas, who shot himself in front of his teacher and his second period English class of 30 students on the morning of January 8, 1991.
In an interview, Vedder stated that he wanted to give more importance and reaction to little Jeremy’s story. He also stated that suicide is not the answer to problems and one must be stronger in order to come back since nothing changes once you kill yourself.
Here is what Vedder said:
“It came from a small paragraph in a paper which means you kill yourself and you make a big old sacrifice and try to get your revenge. That all you’re gonna end up with is a paragraph in a newspaper. Sixty-four degrees and cloudy in a suburban neighborhood. That’s the beginning of the video and that’s the same thing in the end; it does nothing … nothing changes. The world goes on and you’re gone. The best revenge is to live on and prove yourself. Be stronger than those people. And then you can come back.”
