The guitarist, producer, and mix engineer of Maynard James Keenan-fronted band Puscifer, Mat Mitchell opened up about the experience of working with one of the most workaholic musicians on earth, Keenan, while calling him an easy person to work with.

During the latest interview he gave to the UG’s Justin Beckner, the core member of Puscifer, Mat Mitchell, has talked about the usual recording process of an album with the frontman of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer, Maynard James Keenan.

Mitchell said that Keenan is pretty quick when it comes to doing vocal tracks. He generally comes with a melody or a rhythm, and puts the puzzle together, the producer said.

When it was asked to Mitchell if Keenan is an easy vocalist to work with or a little bit challenging, he admitted that Maynard James is pretty easy a musician to create unique sounds with. Mitchell explained that the main thing for himself is to know what his role is.

As a producer, Mitchell said that sometimes he needs to be the cheerleader; sometimes he needs to really dig in and pull apart out of somebody; and other times he just needs to stay out of their way.

He continued and stated that Maynard is certainly one of those people where, in his experience, is to kind of stay out of the way and let him work through it. Mat said that if there’s any puzzle left, Keenan will sort through it and it’s going to be killer.

Here’s what Mat Mitchell said when asked if Maynard James Keenan is an easy person to work with:

He’s easy. The main thing for me is when you’re in a producer role, you need to know what your role is.

Sometimes you need to be the cheerleader; sometimes you need to really dig in and pull a part out of somebody; and other times you just need to stay out of their way.

Maynard is certainly one of those people where, in my experience, is to kind of stay out of the way and let him work through it. Sometimes if I interject, maybe it broke his train of thought.

So it’s good to just stay out of the way and let him do his process, knowing that if there’s any puzzle left, that he’s going to sort through it and it’s going to be killer.”
