In a recent interview, Richie Ranno spoke about Black Sabbath and auditioning to be Ozzy Osbourne‘s guitar player. He revealed the peculiar reason Ozzy didn’t hire him.

Richie Ranno is best known as the guitarist of the heavy metal and power pop band Starz. The band’s sound has significantly influenced bands like Mötley Crüe, Poison, Bon Jovi, and Twisted Sister. They were formed in 1975 and are still active despite having multiple hiatuses.

The guitarist recently talked about Black Sabbath and mentioned auditioning for ex-Black Sabbath member Ozzy Osbourne. In his audition, the guitarist had a lot of fun with the rest of the band and thought he fit pretty well. Ozzy didn’t participate in the audition process, and to his surprise, he didn’t get chosen.

After three days, he got the news when they called him to say they had chosen someone else. Ozzy’s lighting director, also a friend of Richie, said that they chose the guy with the blonde hair, a.k.a Bernie, because the rest of the band had dark hair.

Here is how Richie told the story:

“So then, a good two weeks later, I think it was]before they did auditions, and I got a call. They knew that he was a big fan of stars and myself and thought it’d be maybe a good fit. So they flew three people out there: Rudy Sarzo’s brother, Robert, Bernie Tormé, and myself, and I was the first person to play with them.

And when they were setting up the instruments and getting ready to play, they were all like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe this is the first time we’re getting on our instruments,’ and I thought, ‘Oh, these poor guys, how they must feel,’ so I just jammed. We didn’t play any songs for a while. And then we played some Ozzy songs.”

He continued:

“I thought I was going to get the gig. I thought I played well. We all got along really well. But anyway, Ozzy didn’t show for the auditions. They just sent me home. After about three days, they said, ‘Okay, we picked somebody.’

So, later, my buddy, the lighting director for Ozzy, called me and said, ‘Listen, the reason you didn’t get it is that Ozzy said, ‘Who had blond hair, any of them?’ And my hair was pretty dark at the time. And Bernie had blond hair, and my friend said, ‘They took the blond-haired guy.'”
