Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn opened up about his alcohol addiction during his conversation with Dream Theater’s John Petrucci in No F’n Regrets and stressed that the Pantera members caused it.

Pantera released their eighth studio album entitled ‘The Great Southern Trendkill’ on May 7, 1996, and the band performed countless concerts and tours as a part of promoting their album. In one of these tours, Machine Head joined Pantera, and the band members spent a long time with each other during it.

So, Robb Flynn recalled the time they were on tour with Pantera in 1997 to reveal that he became heavily addicted to alcohol, probably due to the crazy parties that Pantera members threw after the concerts. He emphasized that ‘he was sober as a judge’ before that tour.

The frontman explained the main reason behind his previous sobriety, saying that he was afraid of losing his voice, but now he’s drinking all the time. Robb Flynn said that he’s drinking several shots before and after his stage performances which he still can’t believe.

In Flynn’s words, he said:

“I’ve gone back and forth many times in my life with it. For the first few years I toured, I was sober as a judge, I wouldn’t even drink after the show, I was paranoid about losing my voice. Then I went on tour with Pantera.

From that point on, I’m drinking all the time. Then I’m drinking between 7 and 10 shots of vodka prior to the show, and another three or four during the show on stage. After the show, if I had a show the next day, I would stop and not drink anything but if I had a day off, I would probably have another 28 to 30 shots… Probably three or four beers.”

He went on:

“Then one day, a decade goes by, I manage to do it, I sleep terribly but I chalk that up for being on the road – sleeping shitty on the road, bouncing up and down. Then I started to measure. Before that, I just poured vodka into a soda cup, and then I had a shot, which almost never happens.

I was like, ‘I wonder how many shots am I pre-gig drinking?’ Then I measured it. It was 7 shots. It blew my mind. In my mind, I was having maybe a shot or two. If I’m doing a headliner show, I’m doing maybe 11 or 12 shots prior and during. It’s vodka!”
