In an interview with Rolling Stone, Led Zeppelin‘s legendary frontman Robert Plant shared a hilarious memory about his late bandmate and friend John Bonham which made him quite emotional.
As you may know, The iconic drummer of Led Zeppelin, John Bonham, also known as Bonzo, sadly passed away on September 25, 1980, at the age of 32. Bonham was found unresponsive following a heavy day of drinking at the rehearsals. His death was later announced to be caused by a shock from inhaling vomit with alcohol in his system.
Recently, Robert Plant joined an interview with Rolling Stone magazine and remembered the time he called himself ‘golden god‘ at Bonham’s birthday party in 1975. Apparently, they were celebrating Bonzo’s birthday somewhere in Beverly Hills and things got a little crazy. Plant mentioned The Beatles guitarist George Harrison was also at the party and he even karate-chopped John’s three-tier birthday cake.
Furthermore, Robert stated that at some point at the party, he thought it was missing something to complete the whole nonsense happening that night. Therefore, he decided to shout out he was a golden god while opening up his arms on a balcony at a hotel in Los Angeles.
Here’s how Robert Plant recalled the moment:
“Whatever was said from minute to the minute was just sheer comic entertainment most of the time in those early Led Zeppelin days.
I think it was in the middle of some ridiculous moment, maybe even Bonzo’s birthday party somewhere up in Beverly Hills, where somebody had made John a three-tier birthday cake.
John was showing it around the room, and he showed it to somebody, I think it was George Harrison, who karate-chopped the cake. Bonzo decided that there was something that needed to be done about that, and there were all sorts of scuttling, and it was just another one of that boyish prank-type of events going on.
And it just seemed that the only thing that was missing was somebody to actually round the whole thing up with even more nonsense. So I just opened my arms and just proclaimed that. And then I think a piece of cake sadly lodged somewhere at the end of my nose or something.”
Sharing the memory with his beloved bandmate Bonzo, Robert Plant got quite emotional and revealed how he still felt a connection with him by stating:
“I’m still living in the area where we were both from, so he’s present and with me quite a lot. A lot of people knew him as they know me. We haven’t gone very far, apart from a couple of sad adventures. So he’s still very present here.”
So yeah, it’s 40 years, and he’s still greatly lost from us, far and gone. But I’m looking up into the cloudy sky of the nighttime here. I’m sure he’s standing outside a pub somewhere, metaphorically, cracking a joke.”
