Sammy Hagar, who is the former singer of Van Halen and the current member of The Circle, shared his opinion about the encore culture via his official Instagram account.
Encores are one of the most widespread cultural elements in the rock and metal scenes, which can be described as the show after the show. Whenever a band ends their show and gets off stage, the crowd calls out to them to return for a couple more songs.
After a short period, most of the bands and musicians return to the stage even after their show has ended because the whole crowd wants to hear them once again, which is what we call the encore tradition.
One of his fans criticized the Red Rocker and his band for not doing any encores after the end of their shows and claimed that his last concert ended before it was supposed to. Later on, Sammy responded to his fan and explained why he is making the wrong assumption.
In his response, Sammy pointed out that they have never done the traditional encores because they think that it is nothing but bullshit. In addition to that, Sammy also said that they gave it everything they could in their most recent show.
Furthermore, Sammy touched upon the fact that shows can sometimes end before or after the given time, differing by stage and mood. However, he added that they always do their best to make sure that everybody thinks they have gotten their money’s worth.
One of the fans wrote:
“90-minute concert in Aurora, no encore, what gives Sammy. The ticket said 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. but was over at 9:30. Just wondering if you were hungover from the concert the night before. Don’t get me wrong, the concert was nice but it wasn’t a party. Like, do the set and get out. Come back to St. Louis to have a party.”
To which Sammy Hagar replied:
“Whoa whoa whoa. We played for an hour and 35′. We don’t have a setlist that’s etched in stone and we don’t do traditional encores, ever anywhere! I don’t leave the stage and come back because that’s bullshit and you know it.
But we gave it everything we got and I felt like that was a great show from the bottom of my heart. To come back and do more?
It could’ve been a letdown? Not sure? But if you’ve seen us before you know that’s the way we do it. Sometimes we play longer sometimes we play shorter but no matter what it is, I feel everyone gets more than their money’s worth. Just saying.”
