One of the most successful British composers of the century, Elton John, has posted a recent photo of Rina Sawayama and congratulated the young British star after she became eligible for BRIT’s and Mercury Prize.
As you may already remember, back in last year, the music industry in the United Kingdom has been shaken by the news that British-Japanese artist Rina Sawanaya could not be able to enter the ‘British Awards’ and ‘Mercury Awards’ because ‘he’s not British enough’ to be eligible for the ceremony.
This week, British Phonographic Industry has decided to change the rules of eligibility for all nominees for the British Awards and Mercury Prize and starting this year, Rina Sawayama will be able to nominate to the price without British citizenship.
According to the recently shared post of Rina, the rules broadened to include the people who have been a resident of the United Kingdom for five years. In his latest Instagram post, Sir Elton John shared his happiness after the news and showed his support for Rina while calling her the next generation of multi-cultural British talent.
Here is what Sir Elton John wrote in the caption:
“Fantastic news from BPI Music that they have revised the rules on who is eligible for the BRITs and Mercury Prize.
I was so sad for Rina when she was excluded from the Mercury Prize last year but I’m happy to see the rules changed so the next generation of multi-cultural British talent can be recognized.”
Rina Sawayama has made an official announcement after the decision:
“I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for sharing the #SawayaMaisBritish campaign worldwide and igniting this important conversation about Britishness.”
