Sir Elton John shared a post on his official Instagram page celebrating the six-year anniversary of marriage and 15 years of Civil Partnership with his husband David Furnish while stressing the importance of equality for all, especially when it comes to love.
As you may know, same-sex marriage became legal in the United Kingdom in March 2014, fortunately, today it is legally performed and recognized in 29 countries including Canada, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Same-sex marriage stands for marriage equality and has been something the LGBTQ+ community working on for so many years.
While there are countries that allow people to be who they are, there is still a majority of countries that stand strictly against the LGBTQ+ community, let alone same-sex marriage. Unfortunately, still to this day, there are countries which not being heterosexual is a crime and the consequences vary.
Elton John and filmmaker David Furnish have begun dating in 1993, after the Civil Partnership Act in 2005, John and Furnish became one of the first couples to form a Civil Partnership in the United Kingdom. Thanks to gay marriage becoming legal, the couple got married on December 21, 2014, on the ninth anniversary of their civil partnership.
The lovely couple also have two sons, Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John was born on December 25, 2010, and Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John was born January 11, 2013.
For their sixth anniversary of marriage and 15 years of Civil Partnership, Elton John shared a post on his official Instagram page expressing his gratitude for the love they have between them and their children.
In addition to this, John also stressed the importance of equality for all, stating that discrimination against people who are not heterosexual is a disgrace. Elton John expressed the importance of the freedom to love whoever one wants.
Here is what Elton John stated in the caption of his post:
“Today David Furnish and I are celebrating two anniversaries: 15 years of Civil Partnership and 6 years of marriage. Our relationship gets stronger every day, and I am extremely grateful for the love we share and our two beautiful sons.
However, we are the lucky ones, as millions of gay people throughout the world are discriminated against because of their sexuality. This is a disgrace. We all deserve to love who we want. We will continue to fight for equality for all.”
