The legendary English rockstar, Elton John, recently posted a photo on his Instagram account and talked about how all we have learned from COVID-19 can be applied to one of the most deadly epidemics ever.

Elton John is without a doubt one of the most accomplished and famous rockstars of all time. However, alongside his love and talent for music, Elton John is a philanthropist and has even established his own foundation. His sensitivity towards crucial issues, his motivation to raise awareness on important matters, and his support for charities were applauded by Queen Elizabeth II, who knighted Elton John in 1998.

Sir Elton John established The Elton John AIDS Foundation back in 1992. It is to this day, one of the most powerful independent AIDS organizations in the world, and its mission is rather simple; to end the deadly AIDS epidemic. The organization is sensitive towards the factor of discrimination and how it prevents people from getting access to treatment before it’s too late. One of the mottos of the organization is ‘No more discrimination. No more HIV infections. No more AIDS deaths. No matter who or where you are.’

In his recent Instagram post, Elton John discussed how COVID-19 has taught us ‘that testing is critical to know your status so you can take action to protect yourself and others to save lives.’ He said that the same goes for AIDS and that there has been so much progress since the ’80s. Elton John added that this week is National HIV Test Week in the UK and that he wants everyone to know how easy and important it is to find out about your status.

Here’s what Elton John said in the caption of his first post:

“If there is one thing the #COVID19 pandemic has taught us, it’s that testing is critical to know your status so you can take action to protect yourself and others to save lives. The same goes for HIV. That’s why one of the headline recommendations in the #HIVCommission’s report was for opt-out testing in England so that we can reach #0HIVby30.

This week is National #HIVTestWeek in the UK. We want everyone to know how important it is, and how easy it is, to find out your status. There are many ways to access testing nowadays and self-testing at home couldnt be easier. It is also the most convenient and safest way you can find out your status even now during the pandemic.

It is amazing how far we have come since the ’80s and people can now live the full and healthy life that they were meant to. So please get tested, know your status, and if you need, get on treatment. Elton John AIDS Foundation.”
