Exodus and Slayer guitarist, Gary Holt, recently posted an old photo of himself and some unforgettable metal stars on his Instagram account and celebrated the birthday of the late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton.

Gary Holt is one of the best-known metal stars of all time as he has been in the metal scene since 1981. Holt achieved mainstream fame as the guitarist of Exodus and his fame increased, even more, when he was invited to Slayer to fill in for Jeff Hanneman. In 2013 he was confirmed to be a permanent member of the band and he remained with Slayer until their disbandment in 2019.

Being in the metal world since 1981 means that Holt had the chance to meet some highly famous metal stars, some of who left us too early. Recently, he posted a photo from his 21st birthday, back in 1985, in which he can be seen having fun with Metallica’s James, Cliff Burton, Lars, and Vio-Lence’s ViDean.

In the caption of his post, he paid his respects to Cliff Burton, Metallica’s bassist who passed away on September 27, 1986, in a bus crash in Sweden while Metallica was touring with the Master of Puppets. Cliff Burton was known for his musical genius and he was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.

Gary Holt said that Cliff was ‘the best there ever was‘ and confessed that he still misses him dearly. He appreciated Cliff’s immense talent and said that although he was as successful and as talented as he was, he was still the kindest and best dude which made him an even better metal star.

Here’s what Gary Holt said in the caption of his recent Instagram post:

“Happy birthday Cliff, the best there ever was, always missed. Immense talent and the best dude on top of it. Seen here on my 21st birthday in the bathroom at Ruthies Inn with James, Lars, and Dean from Vio-Lence, and of the left and clipped out of this pic for some reason is Eric Wong, taken by Harald Oimoen. Cliff Burton Family Official much love as always 🤘🏻”
