During a recent conversation on the Cassius Morris Show, David Lee Roth and Whitesnake’s touring artist, Steve Vai, talked about the famous personality he would love to be even for just one day and described the first time that he felt starstruck.
Steve Vai is known for his successful career as a guitarist, composer, singer, and producer, and his career in music started rather early in 1978 when he was 18 years old. His first job as a musician was to be the transcriptionist of Frank Zappa which must have been highly exciting.
As the years progressed, Vai started playing in Zappa‘s band, from 1980 to 1983, and then went on to record and tour with famous bands such as Whitesnake, David Lee Roth, Alcatraz, and well-known artists such as Ozzy Osbourne, Spinal Tap, Mary Jane Blige, and many more.
In a recent interview, the three-times Grammy-winning musician talked about the person that he would want to switch abilities with. As it turns out, that person for Steve Vai is the famous basketball player Michael Jordan, and the reason why is that Vai really loves ‘the way Michael Jordan flies through the air.’
Here’s what Steve Vai said when he was asked who he would want to switch abilities with:
“I love the way Michael Jordan flies through the air.”
After that, the interviewer went on to ask Vai whether he, as a successful musician, has ever met any musicians during his career that have left him feeling starstruck. Vai started by saying that that was exactly how he felt every time he was around Zappa and then thought about the time he met Prince.
However, after a series of thoughts, he concluded by saying that if he had to pick one moment that he felt the most starstruck, that was when he met Tom Waits, the legendary Jazz and Blues musician. Vai avoided giving details about their encounter and said that it was ‘very private‘ which increased his fans’ curiosity.
This is what he responded when he was asked to describe one moment in his life that he felt starstruck:
“Every time I was ever around Frank Zappa. I met Prince once and I was pretty… well, actually, that was OK. It was probably Tom Waits, I met Tom, he was actually… well, it’s very private, but I got to know him. For a while, it was very difficult.”
