During a recent interview with Rock Hard Greece, the legendary guitarist Steve Vai reflected on other successful guitar players’ impact on him, and he described Yngwie Malmsteen as a ‘unique player.’
As you may recall, five notable guitarists, Tosin Abasi, Nuno Bettencourt, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, and Zakk Wylde, came together and formed a supergroup named Generation Axe in 2016. The band has constantly been touring ever since. They have been performing songs from their various catalogs of several artists.
As Steve Vai has played with Yngwie Malmsteen on several occasions, he indeed has an idea of his playing style. He previously praised Malmsteen many times and showed great admiration for his technique. During a recent conversation, Steve Vai said that sharing the stage with these musicians is always a great motivation for him to top himself.
When it comes to Malmsteen, Vai stated that he has a unique playing style, and watching him closely was a fantastic experience for him. The guitarist stressed that he couldn’t play like Yngwie Malmsteen as they have entirely divergent styles but playing together certainly brings out a more layered work. Steve Vai added that these experiences are one of the greatest things about being a musician.
Here is how Steve Vai reflected on Yngwie Malmsteen:
“And with Yngwie, you stand next to Yngwie, and you’re standing next to a person that is unique. He owns his music and his playing. He is a unique player, and I’ve watched him from this close, and watching that was like, ‘What the hell is he doing?’ I know what he’s doing, but I can’t.
I don’t do it, but it’s marvelous to see someone like Yngwie Malmsteen at the top of his game, and we are playing together, and we’re supporting each other to take it to different, more evolved places. This is one of the greatest things about being a musician.”
