The iconic drummer of ‘Crosby, Stills & Nash’ back in the 80’s and also one of the closest friends of Joe Walsh, Joe Vitale, was recently interviewed by Rolling Stone and talked about his friendship with Joe in these days.
While admitting that Joe was one of the most trustworthy people in the earth about his addictions, Joe also claimed that he has done whatever he could do for him. Whether they were loving him or not, everyone was scared to death for Joe.
As you may remember, Walsh has told his own story of alcohol and drug dependence back in 2018 and admitted that he’s sober for 25 years. According to him, there was no awareness of what that was. While he tried to play guitar in front of some people, he could not do it because of his addiction.
Let’s hear what Joe said about Walsh:
“All his close friends and family were worried about him. We did whatever we could do. That’s a really delicate situation in anyone’s life.
Nobody was going to do an intervention. But when you look back, sometimes you think, ‘I love this guy so much, I don’t care if he hates me. I’m going to do an intervention.’ But nobody did that.
Fortunately, he decided that on his own when the Eagles got back together [in 1994]. They knew, and he knew, that it wouldn’t work if his substance problem wasn’t fixed or remedied.
We were scared to death for him. I’ve known him since 1968. He’s a dear friend and I hated seeing someone going down the drain like that.
You don’t condemn someone like that. You just hope and pray they’re going to find their way back to sanity. And he did. Man, did he. He’s so healthy now. He’s been clean and sober since 1994. That’s a long time.”
