The official Instagram page of The Beatles legend, John Lennon, has quoted an excerpt from the book in the upcoming exclusive box set, ‘Gimme Some Truth,’ in which his widow, Yoko Ono, reveals why they once dressed up as the British poets, Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
Taken from the 124-page special book accompanying the deluxe box set, ‘Gimme Some Truth,’ which includes 36 remixed songs across 2 CDS and a Blu-Ray audio disc, the interview given by Ono proves the admiration of the couple to the canonic names in English literature.
In the interview, Yoko recalls that one morning she woke up with ‘Let Me Count The Ways,’ a line from the 43rd sonnet of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, ringing in her head and called John. She says Lennon played it over the phone.
When she was asked about the time when the two wrote one with a Robert Browning line and were dressed up as the Brownings for a lovely portrait, Yoko explained that John and she always thought that they were the reincarnation of Robert and Liz.
Then, as they discussed the Double Fantasy cover, they came up with the idea that Lennon should be dressed as Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Ono as Robert Browning. Yoko revealed that John thought they should look very prim and proper with just their hands coming out of the paintings and holding in the middle, the funny touch.
In celebration of John Lennon’s 80th birthday, ‘Gimme Some Truth,’ a collection of some of the best-loved songs from Lennon’s solo career will be released via Capitol/UMe. Produced and handpicked by Yoko Ono Lennon and Sean Ono Lennon, 36 remixed songs will present the listeners a never-before-heard ultimate listening experience.
Here’s what was said in the latest Instagram post of John Lennon:
“Grow Old With Me. 🎁 Get ‘Gimme Some Truth.’ Box Sets for Xmas!⠀
⠀⠀
Yoko: One early morning in the summer of 1980, I woke up with ‘Let Me Count The Ways’ ringing in my head. I called John who was then in Bermuda and played it over the phone. ⠀
⠀
‘How d’you like it?’ ⠀
⠀
‘I really like it. It’s beautiful’. ⠀
⠀
‘How about you writing one with a Robert Browning line and we’ll have portraits of us as Elizabeth and Robert on the cover?’ ⠀
⠀
(This needs a little explaining. John and I always thought, among many other things, that we were maybe the reincarnation of Robert and Liz. So ⠀
he immediately knew what I was talking about).”
The post continued as:
“We discussed then about the Double Fantasy cover, that it should be two portraits, one of Elizabeth and the other of Robert, only the faces would be ours. ⠀
John thought we should look very prim and proper with just our hands coming out of the paintings and holding in the middle, the funny touch. We both laughed.
