Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello revealed the story behind his song with The Bloody Beetroots, Radium Girls, by sharing a new post on his official Instagram account.

Radium Girls is a lead single of Tom and The Bloody Beetroots for their upcoming EP, and the song featuring Pussy Riot‘s Nadya Tolokonnikova, The Interrupters‘ Aimee Interrupter, White Lung’s Mish Way, and The Last Internationale’s Delila Paz.

After the release of the song, most people were wondering what’s the story of the Radium Girls song, and Tom confirmed today that the lyrics are related to a heartbreaking incident about the female workers who contracted radiation poisoning.

Radium Girls were female workers who start painting in three different factories. Even though the employers told that the painture was harmless, there were deadly amounts of radium. Therefore, five women sued their employers and the incident took place as one of the darkest stories in the United States.

Here is what Tom Morello said:

From one of my yearly visits to the Radium Girls memorial in Ottawa, IL. My new song with The Bloody Beetroots, Pussy Riot, Aimee Interrupter, Mish Way, and The Last Internationale pays tribute to these quiet heroes and reminds us all to stand up and fight for the fair and just treatment of workers everywhere.”
