During an interview with Mojo Magazine, Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi opened up about the ‘ridiculous’ belief of Black Sabbath members about being guided by an unseen fifth member.

As you may know, the iconic heavy metal band Black Sabbath was formed by Ozzy Osbourne, the guitarist Tony Iommi, drummer Bill Ward, and the bassist Geezer Butler in 1968. With Iommi’s insistence and the support of the other band members, Ozzy Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath on April 27, 1979, due to excessive substance abuse.

Following a successful solo career, Osbourne and the members of Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, reunited for a performance at the Ozzfest tour alongside Osbourne’s solo band.

During a recent interview, Tony Iommi talked about the unique career of Black Sabbath and shared some unknown details regarding a spiritual being that the band members believed. Iommi stated that even though it sounds ridiculous right now, they all believed in the existence of a fifth member who guided them throughout their career.

Moreover, Tony mentioned that he and his bandmates were spending most o their time together and they quite often experienced weird and strange events. The iconic guitarist stated that considering all the unusual things happening around them, they easily believed that there was someone who was watching them all the time.

Here’s what Tony Iommi stated about the fifth member of Black Sabbath:

“It sounds ridiculous now, but we always felt that there was somebody overlooking us and guiding us. We felt this presence when we were all together. It was one of those things we’d refer to as being the over-self or the fifth member, looking out for us.

We were so close as a band, we lived in each other’s pockets from the start, that we became as one. This fifth member seemed very real and there to us. Things always seemed to happen to us that was quite weird.

We’d be in the van, for example, and one of us would look out of the window and go: ‘Oh, look, there’s a fish-and-chip shop over there’. And just as we’d say that the lights would go out in the shop. There were just always strange things happening to us back then.”
