Black Sabbath co-founder and guitarist Tony Iommi recently gave an interview to Rolling Stone, in which he said that it is hard for him to talk on the phone with Ozzy Osbourne because of the time difference.
Tony Iommi and Ozzy Osbourne played together for many years in Black Sabbath until they completed their final concert tour on February 4, 2017. Besides being bandmates for years, the two are also longtime friends despite their personal differences, which had once led to conflicts in Black Sabbath. They have achieved to always keep in touch despite their minor conflicts.
As you probably know, Ozzy Osbourne has been dealing with some health issues in recent years, and they even interrupted his music career. In an interview before, Osbourne had stated that he has never been that close to his former bandmate Tony Iommi. However, Ozzy referred to his health problems and said that Iommi has been very supportive during his difficult times. Iommi had also stated that during the COVID-19 lockdown, he kept in touch with Osbourne on a daily basis. It seems like the pandemic made the bond between the two Black Sabbath icons tighter.
During his recent interview, Tony Iommi was asked about how often he gets in contact with Ozzy Osbourne and he responded that they are always in touch but they prefer texting rather than speaking on the phone. For Iommi, the reason for that is the time difference as they live in different countries. Tony explained that he gets worried when Osbourne calls him during inappropriate times because he thinks that something bad has happened. Thus, now they are mostly texting each other to communicate.
When asked about their frequency of communication, Iommi replied that:
“We’re in touch quite a lot. We don’t really speak because we are useless on the phone, the pair of us.
I think we stopped that when he used to phone me at 2 o’clock in the morning and I’d go, ‘Oz, it’s 2 o’clock in the morning.’ ‘Oh, oh, sorry. Alright. Bye.’
He forgets about what time it is in England, and of course, when the phone goes at that time of the morning you think, ‘Oh, Christ. What’s that? Somebody’s died or something has happened.’
And of course, it’s him going, ‘Oh, oh, oh, oh, sorry. I didn’t know it was that time.’ So we tend to sort of just text now.”
Ozzy Osbourne has been working on his new album, and it is set to be released in spring 2022. His forthcoming record will feature many important names such as Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Zakk Wylde. Tony Iommi will also contribute to the album and in the interview, he revealed that he wrote the lyrics of the song that he played for the album.
