Trivium frontman Matt Heafy recently gave some details about his time opening for Metallica during an interview with El Cuartel Del Metal. According to the singer, they are the greatest band in the entire world, and James Hetfield‘s voice is in its best shape compared to his earlier days.

As some of you might know, Matt Heafy had previously opened up about Metallica’s influence on his journey as a musician after being introduced to heavy metal by his classmate, who gave him a copy of the band’s self-titled album. His band, Trivium, was also formed thanks to a Metallica song since singer Brad Lewter noticed Heafy during his eighth-grade talent show where he performed a cover version of ‘No Leaf Clover.

When the future bandmates went over to drummer Travis Smith’s house, they played Metallica’s ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls,’ which kickstarted Heafy’s tenure with Trivium and the rest of his music career. Seven years after their formation, the band played at the 2006 Download Festival on the main stage with Korn and Metallica, which was the first time Matt Heady met his heroes. From then on, the band shared the stage with their inspirations on several occasions.

Recently, Trivium opened for Metallica during the band’s concert on November 4 at Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. During an interview, Matt Heafy opened up about seeing the band in a relatively small show where there were 7000 people.

According to the singer, a small show for Metallica is much bigger than what Trivium can do on a big show. However, he added that seeing them play at an up-close range was incredible for the musician. Furthermore, Matt Heafy said that James Hetfield’s vocals sound better than ever. If you ask him, Hetfield is at the top of his game when it comes to his voice, especially when compared to his younger version.

About seeing Metallica live, Heafy said:

“To be able to see them at a small show; I mean, a small show for them is seven thousand people. That’s more people than we can do on a big show. So, to be able to watch them that close, I was able to be on the floor and watch them, it was incredible.

They’re all amazing, but James Hetfield’s voice sounds better than ever. I don’t know how the hell that happened, but he sounds like a better singer now than he’s ever been. And it’s just so amazing. The vibe was great.”
