It looks like something very important is going on inside the “mosh pit”, probably something to do with the Queen ant.
It seems they’re trying to protect the center: the ones rotating protect the sides from ground insects, while the ones over the center are protecting it from winged threats. Or maybe they’re just dancing to music while eating a wasp alive.
