In a recent podcast episode of ‘Talkin’ ‘Bout Rock,’ original Dio drummer Vinny Appice shared why he and Ronnie James Dio were left out of the Black Sabbath during the Rock Hall induction in 2006.

The iconic heavy metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio was best known for his works with Black Sabbath and Rainbow. In addition, Appice played with Dio in his band Dio and Black Sabbath.

Dio started his career with Rainbow and recorded three studio albums and one live set before leaving the band in 1978. Two years later, he replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath and recorded ‘Heaven And Hell,’ ‘Mob Rules,’ plus ‘Live Evil,’ before leaving in 1982.

He reunited with Sabbath 10 years later for ‘Dehumanizer.’ Before reuniting with Sabbath, he worked on his band, Dio. He recorded ten studio albums, including the classic 1983 debut, ‘Holy Diver.’ Unfortunately, he passed away from stomach cancer 12 years ago at age 67 and never was inducted to Rock Hall.

Vinny Appice stated that the people in charge were wrong not to include Ronnie James Dio in the Rock Hall. He added that besides being a part of several Black Sabbath albums, he was also a part of Rainbow and Dio, which significantly impacted the rock scene. Appice said they didn’t even mention him even though he was also a part of the band’s history, but he understood that it meant nothing to them.

Vinny Appice’s words about not being included in Rock Hall induction:

“Cause they’re a bunch of f*ckin’ assholes. I mean, Sabbath wasn’t in it for how long? They finally got in it [16 years ago]. I’ve been to that place, and there wasn’t much of Ronnie in there either. It’s, like, Ronnie? Come on! Rainbow, ‘Man On The Silver Mountain,’ ‘Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll.’

And then Sabbath, the ‘Heaven And Hell’ album and the rest of the albums we did, and then Dio, and he’s only in there for this 12-inch square placemat or something. They don’t mention me. Hey, you know what? I’ve been around. I’m still around for all these years. I guess it doesn’t count for anything.”
