Pantera released their sixth studio album entitled ‘Vulgar Display of Power’ on February 25, 1992. The album gained critical acclaim, received very positive reviews from the fans, and was regarded as one of the most influential heavy metal albums.
The album’s tracks not only influenced the next generation musicians but also had a great influence on the famous actor, Christian Bale. The actor stated that he listened to Pantera’s ‘By Demons Be driven’ to learn how to play drums for a scene in his movie, ‘The Big Short.’
Christian Bale Learned How To Play Drums From Pantera’s ‘By Demons Be Driven’
‘The Big Short’ is a biographical comedy-drama directed by Adam McKay and released on December 23, 2015, starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt. It is based on the financial crisis between 2007 and 2008, which was affected by the American housing market bubble.
Bale’s character, the hedge fund manager Michael Burry played double-bass drums in one of the scenes, and his performance gained very positive reviews. As a method actor, Bale wanted to play it by himself. So he used and listened to Pantera’s iconic song ‘By Demons Be Driven’ many times while learning how to play the drums.
In Bale’s words, he said:
“It was a wonderful crash course. Double-kick drum, Pantera ‘By Demons Be Driven’ — a fantastic song to begin with. This is how Mike Burry unwound. This is actually how he calmed down. He would listen to it all day long in his headphones — and not just that; Mastodon as well. But his brain is on fire so much that death metal calms him. He’s a very, very different individual to most of us.”
Furthermore, Christian Bale highlighted that ‘By Demons Be Driven’ greatly influenced his character in ‘The Big Short’ while trying to calm down during hard times. Also, Bale revealed that his character Mike listened to another heavy metal band, Mastodon, and Pantera.
